The English Patient is definitely one of those Best Picture winners that creates many great debates with most film lovers. Many love the sweeping love story, the stunning cinematography, the mystery of the leading character, and the great performances by the A-list cast (including Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche). Others feel that the film's length is painfully long, and the storyline could have been more condensed with a taut script, and the film isn't as faithful to the 1992 novel as it should have been. Either way, it's a film that was very successful at the box office and is likely Anthony Minghella's best work.
Looking back, was The English Patient deserving of the Best Picture Oscar among all the films released in 1996? If not, which film was?
Listen and find out what film critic Jack Ferdman thinks—and which film he ultimately chooses as his Rewatching Oscar winner for the year.
